About the Program
Minnesota Home Energy Training (MNHET) is a partnership between the Minnesota Department of Commerce and Center for Energy and Environment (CEE) that recruits, trains, and supports energy efficiency careers across the state. MNHET builds on a nearly 50-year legacy of home energy training and the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP). MNHET will expand access to high-quality energy training across Minnesota.
With experienced partners in energy efficiency including Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College, The Energy Conservatory, and Slipstream, MNHET delivers cutting-edge building science training and state-of-the-art training facilities for participants at every stage in their energy efficiency careers.

General
The Building Science Principles (BSP) Certificate of Knowledge is an introductory, self-paced online course that teaches the fundamentals of energy efficient home performance. It covers how various home systems — like insulation, HVAC, and lighting — interact to impact comfort, safety, and energy efficiency, and explains why improving these systems is essential before pursuing renewable energy upgrades.

Energy Auditor Track
Gain the hands-on skills to diagnose how a home uses — and loses — energy. In this course, you’ll learn to collect data, perform safety checks, and run diagnostic tests using industry-standard equipment.

WAP professionals seeking certification as energy auditors, especially those responsible for audit reports, energy modeling, and measure selection.
There are several prerequisites for energy auditor, including career experience, energy modeling experience, and previous trainings. Generally, it takes at least six months of work in a related position to challenge the Energy Auditor exam. You must have an approval form from BPI before taking this course. The Building Science Principles (BSP) Certificate of Knowledge serves as a foundational prerequisite for the Home Energy Professional (HEP) Energy Auditor certification.

Become the final check for quality and compliance. This course trains you to ensure that every weatherization project meets technical standards and delivers safe, effective results for households.

Experienced WAP staff who are responsible for final project inspections, program compliance, or ensuring work quality in the field.
Candidates must hold an active BPI Energy Auditor Certification in order to sit for the QCI exam; you do not need to fill out a separate application to sit for the Quality Control Inspector certification exam. Refer to the Energy Auditor Scheme Handbook for details on the EA requirements.
This one-day session helps certified energy auditors prepare for their BPI HEP Energy Auditor field recertification exam. Participants will review the BPI Field Guide, refresh key building science concepts, and practice critical diagnostic tests used in the field. The course concludes with the opportunity to complete the proctored field exam on site in the days following the review (scheduled separately).
Currently certified BPI HEP Energy Auditors who are preparing for renewal and want a focused, hands-on review before testing.

This training is held in an HVAC lab with many different types of mechanical equipment for hands-on experience of equipment you may see in the field. Participants will receive hands-on experience with the types of HVAC systems they may see in the field. Curious about a specific type of equipment? Uniform Grant Guidance for Federal Funds Training Commerce has once again partnered with CPA Kevin Myren, who will lead a half-day virtual training on Uniform Grant Guidance for Federal Funds from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) 2 CFR 200. As a reminder, per WAP MN Policy Manual Section 6.9.2.1, any fiscal staff working with the weatherization program must attend initial training on OMB Guidelines within one year of the hire date. This course meets that requirement.
