Measured Savings from Domestic Hot Water Control Strategies in Multifamily Buildings with Recirculation Loops

To investigate the strategy of reducing system temperatures during periods of low demand, time-based and demand-based temperature controls were installed in three apartment buildings.

Commercial Gas Space Heating Equipment: Opportunities to Increase Energy Efficiency

This study was undertaken to identify cost effective energy efficiency technologies and strategies for gas-fired space heating of small commercial buildings (less than 50,000 sq. ft.); to identify potential approaches for increasing market penetration of these technologies and strategies; and to identify promising technologies and strategies which require further verification of energy savings by field and/or laboratory testing.

Retrofit Savings for Dual Integrated Appliances in Small Commercial and Multifamily Buildings

DIA systems have had substantial market penetration in the warmer climates of the mid-atlantic states, but there are appropriate selected markets in colder climates as well. The primary goal of this study is to assess the applicability of DIA systems in small commercial and multi-family buildings in a cold climate.

Commercial Gas Cooking Equipment: Current Status and Future Directions

A number of other promising technologies have been developed and tested in the laboratory (eg; pulse combustion fryers and griddles, vent dampers) but have not been manufactured or else were marketed for a while and then withdrawn, apparently due to a lack of interest in the marketplace.

Radon Mitigation Energy Cost Penalty Research Project

This study performed an investigation of the energy penalty of active soil depressurization radon mitigation systems.

Potential for Savings Using a Gas Booster Heater in Commercial Dishwashing Applications

The impact of booster heaters on several businesses' electric bills was evaluated, along with the savings associated with using gas booster heaters.

The Technology and Economics of Higher Efficiency Residential Gas Heating Systems

This report presents a review of residential heating equipment suitable for use in one to four family buildings.

Tracking Aggregate Gas Use in Minneapolis, Minnesota

Aggregate energy consumption data is a valuable resource for energy researchers, regulators, and utilities alike. Our office has used it for a number of years to track historic use trends, to periodically recalibrate our perceptions of what constitutes "typical" use, and as a pseudo-control in program evaluations for which a true matched control was not feasible within our time and budget constraints.

Comparative Energy Performance of Domestic Hot Water Systems in Multifamily Buildings

The overall efficiencies of four types of central domestic hot water (DHW) systems used in multifamily buildings were determined, along with the savings associated with converting to more efficient systems. Commercial tank heaters with integral flue dampers (IFD) were compared to tank heaters without IFDs in three buildings, and a high efficiency, low-mass, front end boiler (FEB) was compared to a space heating boiler also heating DHW in a single building.
