Tracking Aggregate Gas Use in Minneapolis, Minnesota

Aggregate energy consumption data is a valuable resource for energy researchers, regulators, and utilities alike. Our office has used it for a number of years to track historic use trends, to periodically recalibrate our perceptions of what constitutes "typical" use, and as a pseudo-control in program evaluations for which a true matched control was not feasible within our time and budget constraints.

Comparative Energy Performance of Domestic Hot Water Systems in Multifamily Buildings

The overall efficiencies of four types of central domestic hot water (DHW) systems used in multifamily buildings were determined, along with the savings associated with converting to more efficient systems. Commercial tank heaters with integral flue dampers (IFD) were compared to tank heaters without IFDs in three buildings, and a high efficiency, low-mass, front end boiler (FEB) was compared to a space heating boiler also heating DHW in a single building.

Field Measurement of Multifamily Boiler Losses

Space heating offers the best potential for retrofits in this sector for several reasons.

Technical Report

Stack Flow and Loss Measurements of a Commercial Tank Water Heater

The purpose of this study is to better understand the stack losses of a commercial tank water heater. The measurements will be used to help interpret an ongoing study of the heater energy use and domestic hot water demand and estimates of standby losses.

Support of the Joint Foundation Insulation Study Conducted by Robinson Technical Services for Oak Ridge National Laboratory

MEO oversaw ten of the installations through its normal Operation Insulation program activities. This included the program audit and bid specifications, on-site management, inspection and quality control, program administration, financing, and loan processing. Retrofit costs were paid by the homeowners.

Small Commercial Needs Assessment. Part 1: Analysis of NSP Small Commercial Database

The Minneapolis Energy Office worked with Northern States Power to investigate the potential for a small commercial conservation program that would supplement NSP's current programs.

Technical Report

Multifamily Baseline Study. Part 2: Gas End Use Characterization

Since no adequate baseline data was already available, our office selected and studied a sample of buildings.

Technical Report

Evaluation of the Operation Insulation Program

Operation Insulation was created in 1983 to assist homeowners in implementing major weatherization improvements.

Technical Report

Providing Boiler Tune-Ups for Multifamily Buildings, Efficiency Improvements and Contractor Training

Fourteen multifamily boilers in need of efficiency improvements received tune-ups from one of the Minneapolis Energy Office's five multifamily program contractors.

Non-Heating Electric Use and Conservation Potential Among Energy Assistance Program Recipients in Minneapolis

Low income energy programs in Minneapolis have focused on gas used for space and water heating. After high electric bills were found in one program, Northern States Power Company and the City of Minneapolis undertook a joint study of electric use among Energy Assistance Program recipients.
