Media: Why Minnesota Cities Need Better Building Codes to Achieve Energy and Climate Goals (GPI)
Feb 5, 2021
Along with local partners Great Plains Institute, Fresh Energy, and others, CEE provides support to Minnesota cities in pursuit of strong commercial energy codes. Energy codes set standards for new construction and are updated as new technologies and building science evolves, resulting in more energy savings.
As cities across Minnesota set sustainability goals for public health, environmental, and long-term affordability reasons, one strategy to reach these goals involves commercial new construction. Commercial buildings have large energy impacts in cities and present significant opportunities for energy savings. Building efficiently at the time of construction is the most cost-effective method for locking in energy savings that will last the lifetime of the building.
