NEWS: CEE helps Islamic Center save energy and over $100,000 annually
Sep 7, 2018
Minneapolis, MN —
With the help of CEE’s Lending Center and the One-Stop Efficiency Shop, the Abu Huraira Islamic Center in St. Anthony, Minnesota, has completed a series of facility improvements to cut the mosque’s annual energy costs by 60 percent in just four years. One-Stop is a full-service rebate program delivered by CEE on behalf of Xcel Energy.
From 2014 to 2018 (projected), Abu Huraira has lowered its annual energy costs from over $173,000 to just about $66,000. The deep savings come from ongoing pay-offs through lighting and HVAC upgrades, as well as one-time operational adjustments. To enable the improvements while honoring the center’s religious restriction on debt interest, CEE incorporated interest-equivalent amounts into the mosque’s upfront loan costs.
The center also benefited from CEE’s Energy Savings Fund for Nonprofits, which offers financing allocated by CEE and the Minnesota Department of Commerce, Division of Energy Resources, to assist energy efficiency projects implemented in properties owned or occupied by nonprofit entities. Additionally, nonprofit energy efficiency advisor EnerChange helped guide the mosque’s multiyear project planning and implementation.
“As a mission-driven lender, it’s particularly gratifying when we can help a community anchor like Abu Huraira to make such meaningful improvements,” said Jim Hasnik, Director of Lending Programs at CEE. “Working in tandem with EnerChange and One-Stop, we were counting on good results — but the final impact has exceeded all expectations.”
In 2015 and 2016 the center received lighting audits and advising through the One-Stop Efficiency Shop, a full-service rebate program sponsored by Xcel Energy and delivered by CEE in Xcel Energy's Minnesota service territory. The center also installed a building energy management system and improved the facility’s fan controls, allowing for better results at a much lower operating cost.
After completing $34,000 in lighting upgrades in 2015, Abu Huraira received a $12,000 rebate from Xcel Energy. And in 2016, Abu Huraira received a $100,000 loan from the Lending Center to finance $108,000 in HVAC improvements, for which they earned an additional $25,000 in rebates from Xcel Energy and CenterPoint Energy.
“These savings reflect a huge win,” emphasized Jeremy Davis, energy efficiency manager at EnerChange. “And Abu Huraira’s strategic efforts wouldn’t have been possible without financing support.” EnerChange is a cost-free energy efficiency program for nonprofits in Xcel Energy or CenterPoint Energy's service territory.
