Girls Excel in Math 2013
In the 2012-2013 school year the program featured 24 female math teachers and 275 girls participating in four all-day math events throughout the school year. Through these all-girl events, GEM aims to empower girls to continue in the fields of math and science. As a company that is proud to have multiple women engineers, CEE is pleased to support such a unique and important program!
This year GEM partnered with the Will Steger Foundation
to create a lesson that combined energy efficiency and math. The final class of the year was all about geometry and how it relates to an energy efficient home. As a part of this lesson girls designed their own home and explored the various factors that make a home energy efficient, such as whether or not insulation saves money in the long run (they found that it does!)
Along with the lesson Kristen Iverson Poppleton
, Director of Education at the Will Steger Foundation, and Emma Shriver
, Energy Challenge Coordinator at CEE, gave presentations on energy efficient actions that the girls could do to lower energy use in their own home. And of course, Tolby took the opportunity to say hello to all the girls!
