Staff Spotlight: Katie Jones Schmitt
Name: Katie Jones Schmitt, Benchmarking Outreach and Policy Coordinator
Time at CEE: 1 year
Hometown: Lebanon, IN
Favorite school subject: Physics
Why CEE?: CEE gives me space to be a data geek, to improve the environment through energy efficiency, to collaborate with and learn from bright minds — and to do it all with a group of people who are equally as dedicated as I am.
In Katie's words:
CEE provides a starting ground for communities exploring new energy efficiency technologies, distribution methods, and community planning techniques. CEE set the framework for the City of Minneapolis' Clean Energy Partnership — a unique agreement between a city and its utilities, one of the first of its kind. It is thoughtful approaches like this that make CEE stand out. I see us continuing to take on consulting roles in the areas of community energy planning and distribution and training in new technologies and strategies.
In my role, I assist the City of Minneapolis to implement the Commercial Building Rating and Disclosure program. My focus is on large commercial buildings' energy benchmarking, extending CEE's energy efficiency resources to more buildings. My benchmarking work leverages CEE's engineering and outreach expertise to get building performance information into more hands — including those of the public and each building's decision-makers — such that market forces can help drive building owners and managers to invest in more efficient practices.
CEE's benchmarking team aims to use its resources and capacity in the most effective ways. By making building energy transparent, running building energy competitions, hosting sector-specific technical resource workshops, and managing incentives for ENERGY STAR certification, we motivate large commercial buildings to improve their energy efficiency. Throughout, we ensure that the most practical, valuable, and impactful training and outreach strategies are employed.
