Home energy visit reveals clear-cut fixes for new homeowner headaches
After Anni purchased her Minneapolis house in 2015, she knew she needed to do something about the way her home was using energy. She could hear the furnace running constantly, yet her house was still cold. She could feel air escaping from all corners of the house. Clearly something was not right and she needed to take action sooner rather than later.
A little research led Anni to discover Home Energy Squad Enhanced, and she decided to sign up for a home visit. All home visits include the installation of energy saving materials, a blower door test to measure for air leaks, an insulation inspection, and safety checks of the home’s heating system and water heater.
Visits in Minneapolis offer a few additional benefits, thanks to the nation-leading Clean Energy Partnership of the City of Minneapolis, Xcel Energy, and CenterPoint Energy. With support from the partnership, Minneapolis visits include an infrared camera assessment of insulation levels. And if the Home Energy Squad team determines that a home needs insulation, they provide a quote to the homeowner and are available to help schedule the work with a qualified contractor. In 2015, Minneapolis residents also had access to 0% financing for insulation upgrades. On top of all that, Anni received her home visit for free as a part of the City’s limited time offer for income-qualified homeowners. (Home visits in Minneapolis usually cost $70.)
During the visit, Anni learned that her home had little to no insulation, and a clear history of ice dams evidenced by water damage. She knew she would be incredibly cold once the temperatures outside began to drop, and she was nervous about how high her heating bills would be the coming winter. So when she received the insulation quote from the Home Energy Squad Enhanced team, she decided to go for it. It was a big decision, but being able to schedule the work as part of the visit (plus the promise of 0% financing) helped make the decision easier. And from start to finish, Anni found the process simple and straightforward:
“I knew life would be better if I got the work done. And once I made the decision it all happened very fast, with the work completed just 10 days after the visit. Everyone I worked with from the visit team to the insulation folks to the loan staff was very quick, friendly, and easy to deal with.”
Anni could not be happier with the results. Her house is more efficient, more comfortable, much warmer, and much quieter. She also feels a huge relief knowing her heating bills won’t be through the roof next winter:
“It’s unbelievable! I can tell that the insulation had a huge impact because the furnace doesn’t run very often, instead of running incessantly like it did before I had the work completed. And now the house is very comfortable and feels very snug.”
For anyone thinking about scheduling a Home Energy Squad Enhanced visit, Anni says to go for it:
“They will give you a good assessment of the situation and put you in touch with folks that will help with insulation and loan options. Just get the squad in there and see what happens!”
