CEE helps 16 Cities Promote Home Energy Efficiency
Sixteen Minnesota communities are taking part in the Intercity Home Energy Squad® Challenge, working to promote home energy efficiency to help residents lower their energy bills and increase home comfort. The challenge was formed to encourage residents to get a home energy visit through the Home Energy Squad and learn about how their homes use energy.
Generally, home energy visits can encompass anything from simple installations of higher-efficiency lightbulbs and faucet aerators to blower door tests and infrared scanning to identify air leakage. Homeowners receive a report detailing energy experts’ recommendations for opportunities to improve a home’s efficiency, which can save not only energy but also money on utility bills.
Many of us are spending more time in our houses and using more energy because of it, but it also may feel like a strange time to invite an energy consultant into your home. Recognizing this, Xcel Energy and CenterPoint Energy are currently offering free Virtual Home Energy Squad visits. During a virtual visit, an energy consultant will guide customers on a walk-through assessment of their homes via video chat. Residents will receive energy saving tips to start saving energy right away as well as recommendations for next steps that may include a future in-person visit.
By learning more about energy use, residents can be better stewards of community resources and increase their homes’ comfort. Additionally, some of the cities participating in the challenge have energy- or climate-related goals that the energy savings of individual residents can help them reach.
“Exploring how your home uses energy and making improvements can help you as an individual by saving you money on energy bills,” said CEE’s Director of Residential Programs Rebecca Olson, “but it can help your community too, by reducing demand on resources and making progress toward overall energy reduction goals. It’s a win-win.”
CEE will track each community’s Home Energy Squad sign-ups throughout the challenge. At the end of 2020, the city with the highest participation per capita wins. Each year, the winning city will receive a traveling trophy to put on display.
