Wind

Wind is a low cost electricity source comparable, or lower in price, than a conventional coal plant without the associated problems. Wind has the added benefit of having no fuel costs. So in the future wind power costs are stable while fossil fuel prices increase and fluctuate. Of course the weakness of wind is that it is an intermittent resource only available when the wind is blowing. However, as we gain experience with wind we are much better able to plan for its availability. None the less there is the long term question of how much of our electricity we can reliably get from wind. Many experts believe that wind can provide 20% or more of our total electricity needs. A number of studies are underway to better understand how much electricity we can get from wind.
