Renewable
Energy
Conservation should clearly be Minnesota's first energy choice but
it can only meet part of our growing needs. Obviously, we need additional
electricity generation but what should that be? In the long term
this is a very difficult questions. In the short term it's obvious.
Wind.
Wind is a low cost electricity source comparable, or lower in price,
than a conventional coal plant without the associated problems. Wind
has the added benefit of having no fuel costs. So in the future wind
power costs are stable while fossil fuel prices increase and fluctuate.
Studies have indicated that Minnesota has significant potential
to utilize existing biomass for electrical generation. Although several
projects have been proposed and initiated, a comprehensive evaluation
of Minnesota’s biomass resources in relation to existing infrastructure
and appropriate processing technologies has not been completed.
CEE has recently completed two projects that assess the benefits
and potential applications of wind and solar renewable energy systems
in Minnesota.
