Biomass
Studies have indicated that Minnesota has significant potential
to utilize existing biomass for electrical generation. Although several
projects have been proposed and initiated, a comprehensive evaluation
of Minnesota’s biomass resources in relation to existing infrastructure
and appropriate processing technologies has not been completed.
To address these issues, CEE is conducting a biomass research project
on behalf of Xcel Energy’s
Renewable Development Fund. Entitled “Identifying Effective Biomass Strategies: Quantifying
Minnesota’s Resources and Evaluating Future Opportunities,” its
goal is to create a framework that communities and legislators can
use to determine the feasibility
of biomass generated electricity in their region and to develop cost-effective
projects that use local biomass resources efficiently.
